Aechmea fosteriana fue recopilada por primera vez por Mulford y Racine Foster durante su viaje de 1939 a Brasil (detallado en su libro Brasil - Orquídea de los Trópicos). Es una planta tubular con hojas anchas en forma de correa de hasta 2 pies de largo. La superficie de la hoja tiene bandas transversales de forma irregular, oscuras, generalmente incompletas con un color verde mate. La inflorescencia está compuesta por ramas que se extienden. Aechmea fosteriana es excelente montada en la madera o en las superficies de los árboles y puede tomar el sol directo cuando se aclimata. Como pueden ver en las fotos, esta especie puede asumir muchas variaciones de color basadas en la iluminación y otros factores ambientales. Puede alcanzar hasta 20" de altura.
